The history of the Causeway Hotel in Northern Ireland goes back well over 150 years. One of the earliest issues of the Coleraine Chronicle, the local paper (4 May 1844) advertises the facilities of the Causeway Hall, located where the present hotel stands. The owner at the time promised by diligence and attention to do all in his power to promote the comfort of his guests and they may depend on his always keeping a well stocked larder and being well supplied with the choicest wines and liquors. This is still how the Causeway Hotel welcomes its guests today. In the summer of 1863 the Causeway Hotel was taken over and renovated. The owner was a Mr Trail of Ballylough who was the engineer of the Giants Causeway Tramway which ran along the North Antrim coastline. The hotel and tramway were run in close connection. Electric light was supplied to the hotel from the turbines at Bushmills which also supplied the trams. An advertisement in 1890 states that the hotel had been completely renovated and lit with Electric lights and claims to be the only hotel in Ireland lighted by electricity. The hotel today can still boast a stunning location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The world famous Giant's Causeway is right on the hotel's doorstep and the tranquility and beauty of the glorious Antrim coastline is there to be explored. The Causeway Hotel with all its history, comfortable surroundings and warm welcome is the perfect place to stay and visit the many and varied attractions in the area. |
